One of the 20th centurys most gifted songwriters and a figure as symbolic as Gershwin in America or Lennon & McCartney in Britain, Tom Jobim pioneered bossa nova, writing the worldwide hit, The Girl from Ipanema along the way. His seductive melodies and sophisticated harmonies eventually placing him among the ten most recorded popular composers of all time. With the poet Vinicius de Moraes, Jobim created the music for the play, Orfeu da Conceicao and the Elizete Cardoso album Cancao do Amor Demais that pre-figured bossa. He then co-wrote and produced the soundtrack of the award-winning film Orfeu Negro (Black Orpheus) with Luiz Bonfa and Joao Gilbertos extraordinary debut lp (with its hits Chega de Saudade, and Desafinado) that effectively launched bossa nova and changed the course of musical history. The Music of Antonio Carlos Jobim combines rare Brazilian recordings by the pioneers of bossa nova to document the vital first year of the genre. Beginning with Joao Gilberto's Desafinado, that introduced the world to this exciting new style, so simple, yet so shockingly sensual. In addition to Gilberto, the programme comprises six absolutely essential cuts from Silvia Telles, perhaps the finest interpreter of Jobim's compositions and important contributions from the virtuoso guitarists Luiz Bonfa and Bola Sete, the organist Walter Wanderley and amongst others the Brazilian Sinatra, Dick Farney.
