Artist: Art Pepper Title: Work Of Art

Details: Until this day, Art Pepper remains one of the most immediately identifiable and individual alto saxophone stylists in jazz. Like every other young, modern saxophonist to emerge during the 1940s Pepper was influenced by Charlie Parker, but he tempered Parker’s ferocious attack with a pointed elegance that recalled elements of the style of earlier alto sax masters like Benny Carter and Willie Smith. Pepper was a passionate musician, unlike many white West Coast musicians, who were primarily studio musicians who also played jazz. Pepper was a true jazz musician, first and foremost, with a sound that at times came out as pinched and jittery as well as beautifully melodious. Art Pepper had his problems, as a heroin addict he spent a sizeable part of his most productive years in a number of prisons and institutions. As a free man, Pepper was letting it all hang out on the bandstand and in the recording studio, managing to produce some of the finest jazz to be heard and recorded during the 1950s.
