Details:
It is always an exciting and worthwhile undertaking to compare certain compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach with corresponding works of his contemporary composers. As a young man during his Weimar period (1708 - 1717) Bach had the opportunity to study the newest Italian concertos of the time; Duke Johann Ernst of Sachsen-Weimar (brother of the reigning Duke and moreover Bach‘s pupil and friend) and the city organist Johann Gottfried Walther, another friend of Bach‘s, made him aquainted with a larger number of these works. It was typical of Bach to immediately apply the suggestions and ideas derived from them in his own compositions

First of all it was the formal structure of the Italian instrumental concerto which was of great interest to Bach. The three-part sequence of movements (fast - slow - fast) is found in virtually every solo concerto of the master and in most of his chamber music sonatas. These works often correspond to similar works by AntonioVivaldi in the treatment of the solo parts and the tutti sections; in many cases the slow movements also refer to the Italian model

Johann Sebastian Bach however went beyond the mentioned pattern and refined the internal structures in a „rational“ way instead of the more „intuitive“ Italian manner: the development of the faster movements set as a rondo connected with the Fugato denotes an extensive development in musical density. With this development Bach sets the important foundations for the future classical sonata

Christian Brembeck, Harpsichord
