Important epoch-making West Coast 'cool school' recordings documenting Chet Baker's first recordings. His co-leader on these 15 remastered tracks is Gerry Mulligan And together they pioneered the then 'revolutionary' piano-less quartet (apart from the 1st two tracks which feature Jimmy Rowles). On the remaining numbers comprising 5 Mulligan originals one by Chet And a batch of standards the rhythm section is propelled by the dynamic Chico Hamilton with either Bobby Whitlock Or Carson Smith on bass. Chet had played briefly withCharlie Parker earlier that year but in a short time had moved on to the cool-toned style which provided a fresh alternative to the bop-based approach ofDizzy Gillespie Fats Navarro And their followers. Tony Fruscella in New York had made much the same stylistic change at the same time but it was the gifted Baker who over the following 3 decades was to establish And somehow maintain a high-profile but self-destructive career of amazing creative peaks but many personal troughs"
