Artist: Ray Barretto Title: Charanga Moderna
Info: One of the leading congueros of his day Ray Barretto came to Latin music through jazz a musical foundation that would always keep Barretto striving to find ways to modernize Latin music while still working loosely within the traditional framework. Replacing Mongo Santamaria in Tito Puente's 'orquestra' in the late fifties it was Barretto's 1962 "Charanga Moderna" album however that made him a star. Featuring the crossover hit single "El Watusi" (which reached no. 17 on the pop charts) Barretto takes the pachanga rhythm into the future and beyond.
