Thelonious Monk's sole recording as a member of Art Blakey's celebrated Jazz Messengers who also included, on this 1957 session, Johnny Griffin (t s), Bill Hardman (tp) & Spanky Debrest (b). Monk and Blakey's long-term friendship (the drummer played on the pianist’s first and last studio outings) resulted in a close musical understanding between the two which resulted in some true jazz masterpieces. Bonus tracks are a live quartet version of "Bya-ya" and three extremely rare live TV performances by the Jazz Messengers with Sam Dockery on piano, now issued on CD for the first time
