Big Bill Broonzy was one of the most probably the most internationally known country-based style of bluesman of the last century During the second phase of his career from the late 1940s on he performed on concert stages around the world (first visiting Europe in 1951) on radio and TV shows and on the international folk circuit in clubs and at festivals by which time he had become a sophisticated entertainer still honestly portraying his roots but inevitably with rather more glide in his stride than when he first started out His 'second phase' recordings are frequently reissued Here however on this 5CD set are 128 tracks from his formative years of recording when he was still an unknown quantity to white audiences but was already so popular and strong selling to his black audience ('a voice of his people') his 78s usually just credited Big Bill no further explanation needed The usual excellent JSP remastering with authoritative annotation
