Details: This fascinating release Features the complete recordings of John Coltrane with the Dizzy Gillespie Band recorded on 3 separate dates between 1949 And 1951. On two of these Coltrane is in Dizzy's large orchestra And on the other session he is featured in Gillespie's Septet. The disc is completed by 5 tracks of Dinah Washington backed by Coltrane when he was in Teddy Stewart's Band. We are also given the rare opportunity throughout this album to hear the future tenor Sax star play alto And it's interesting to note the heavy Dexter Gordon influence at this early stage of his career. On the Gillespie tracks Coltrane is flanked by players such as : Paul Gonsalves Milt Jackson Kenny Burrell Percy Heath Willie Cook And Afro-Cuban percussion etc; And on the Washington tracks by Cecil Payne Freddie Green And Ray Brown
