Info: Backed by the sublime trio of Tyner Workman And Jones Coltrane decided in mid-1961 to try his luck with his first European tour as a leader. The group which crossed the ocean however wasn't a quartet but a quintet due to the addition of alto Sax And flute player Eric Dolphy. "For a long time" declared Coltrane later "Eric Dolphy And I had been talking about all kinds of improvising techniques. Finally I decided that as long as my band was working steadily it made sense for Eric to join us". The Olympia performances presented on this mid-price double CD are full of an excitement that more than vindicates that decision! Note for collectors : the present performances were not included on the 7-cd set "Live Trane : The European Tours". although the liner notes on that collection state that two tunes ("Impressions" And "My Favorite Things") were recorded in Paris on November 18 1961 recent discographical research has proved that those two performances were recorded in Stockholm Sweden on November 23 1961. Thus none of the music compiled here is duplicated on the "Live Trane" set
