Artist: Sleepy John Estes Title: Legendary Country Blues Artists
Info: One of the first generation of influential rural bluesmen to be recorded (and subsequently 're-discovered' by '60s blues revivalists) John Estes was only a rudimentary guitar player but his expressive voice forthright way with words and intuitive knack of teaming with a pal or two who could augment his presentation placed him among the blues legends. As Barry Lee Pearson of All Music states "The recordings he made from 1929 on have enormous appeal and remain remarkably accessible today. One of the true masters of his idiom he lived in poverty yet was somehow capable of turning his experiences and the conditions of his life into compelling art". The first two discs of this set present 52 of Estes' most renowned recordings from 1929 to 1941. Discs 3 and 4 feature tracks by his accompanists who also recorded in their own right. The first of these guitarist and mandolin player James 'Yank' Rachell (30 tracks) toured and recorded with Estes in the early years
