The Berlin-based group emerged after the Berlin Wall fell and for the past twelve years the 17 Hippies have been playing their whirling, crashing, diving, bobbing and weaving mixture of music from around the world, all over Europe, and beyond. An ever-changing band made up of between 15 and 30 instruments, they have been described as sounding like someone having used a warped blender to mix an accordion, ukelele, banjo, saw, clarinet, violin, trumpet, trombone, flute, a jew's harp, an Indian tanpura, an Irish bouzouki, an assortment of other string and wind instruments, a Zydeco band, Luminescent Orchestrii, and a circus sideshow from somewhere in Eastern Europe. In other words, their sound is quite bizarre and absolutely fantastic. - Phew!Charlie Gillett confirms They do everything so well, these 17 Hippies, writing songs with memorable melodies that they sing effortlessly in German, French or English.
