One of Freddie Hubbard's greatest records! Backlash is a stellar LP -- straight ahead soul jazz with a slight modern touch and the kind of record that makes you wish that Freddie Hubbard didn't mess around so much with all of the different recording concepts that marred his playing through the years. This set's a masterful group of tracks played by a firey sextet that grooves with a righteous soul jazz sound and which features some incredible performances by James Spaulding on alto and flute. The band are lively and strident and play with the kind of spirit that you'd expect to find on a record on Black Jazz or Strata East. Hubbard has more life and creativity in his solos than on most other albums from the time and he shines on tracks like "Backlash" "The Return Of The Prodigal Son" "Little Sunflower" and "On The Que Tee".
