The first release of historic this 1958 recording, Luther Allison (1939-1997) was a dynamic 'second generation' electric bluesman who was still performing exhausting four hour shows when he was felled by lung cancer just five days short of his 58th birthday. He was particularly popular in Europe, where he spent a lot of time from the '80s onwards. Born in Arkansas, he was raised in Chicago where he first recorded professionally for Delmark Records in 1967. However, it now turns out that young Luther first entered a Chicago studio nine years earlier to record this 30 minute private disc.The discovery of this 1958 debut recording represents a blues find that surfaces with all the excitement of some long forgotten historical document. After sitting for 50 years in the home of Luther’s wife, Fannie Allison, Luther’s son Bernard unearthed these monumental recordings to show the music world the portrait of this artist as a young man. I look at this as discovering something like Robert Johnson’s lost songs , said Bernard. I think a lot of Luther’s fans are going to be so amazed with what he was playing at 18. This half hour is Luther Allison raw and pure. It’s the birth of what was to come . Luther is accompanied by fellow budding blues star Bobby Rush and a character remembered only as 'Mule'.
