This rare filmed concert of Gerry Mulligan and Art Farmer in Rome in 1959 is released here on DVD for the first time ever. Mulligan & Farmer had first played together in Manny Albam’s band in 1957, before recording their first piano-less quartet tracks in 1958, with the same rhythm section as here : Bill Crow on bass and Dave Bailey, drums. The same year they had a track featured on the famous ‘Jazz On a Summer’s Day’ film. Farmer plays trumpet (rather than flugelhorn) throughout, and Mulligan does in fact play piano on two tracks - so it’s not completely piano-less !
