Details: Remastered mid-price 18 track CD collecting together all the studio recordings Gerry Mulligan cut for the Prestige label between 1950 And 1952. The 1st 8 tracks come from a New York date with an all-star band led by Woody Herman's bassist Chubby Jackson with J.J. Johnson Kai Winding Zoot Sims Howard McGhee etc. The 2nd session is a tentet playing Mulligan-only compositions anticipating the future 'Jeru' approach And including George Wallington & Nick Travis. The last 3 numbers on the disc were recorded in Los Angeles in 1952 - a piano-less quartet with Red Mitchell And Chico Hamilton. Gerry Mulligan was one of the most versatile musicians in jazz : one of a small number of great baritone Sax players; an excellent pianist; a fine composer; a brilliant arranger; a key pioneer of the Cool School And capable of playing in almost any jazz style
