In the same year they met, Baden Powell and composer Vinicius de Moraes started one of the most successful partnerships of Brazilian Popular Music. Just for the start, twenty-five songs were written in a three week period in which Baden slept on Vinicius’ couch. Vinicius was enchanted by the LP Sambas de Roda e Candomblés da Bahia, Our title Afro Sambas. Baden, influenced by the capoeira player Canjinquinha, started to appear in Capoeira circles and candomble ceremonies where he learned more about this culture. Vinicius and Baden started to write songs inspired by the theme Canto de Yemanjá, Bocoché, Canto de Xangô and the famous Canto de Ossanha. Baden, who also studied Gregorian Chant with the maestro Moacyr Santos, realized that’s the afro chants had similarities with the Gregorian and started to compose melodies in between both rhythms.
