This 3-CD set presents the complete Max Roach Plus Four Sessions - featuring Booker Little and George Coleman - gathering all the US recordings the group made between June 1958 and January 1959, and showcases one of the most overlooked periods in Roach’s remarkable jazz career. The band was completed by tuba player Ray Draper and Art Davis on bass - plus additional piano by Eddie Baker or Tommy Flanagan on two dates, and trombone by Julian Priester on another. As bonus tracks there are : three alternate takes recorded exclusively for the mono version of the first LP, and the only performance made by the group on one well-known TV show. This edition was originally released on 7 LPs : ‘Max on the Chicago Scene’ (EmArcy); ‘Max Roach + 4 At Newport’ (Mercury); ‘Deeds Not Words’ (Riverside); ‘Award-Winning Drummer’ (Time); ‘The Many Sides of Max’ (Mercury); ‘Sessions, Live’ (Calliope); and ‘The Defiant Ones’ (United Artists), - an album recorded under the leadership of Booker Little. 3 CD Set - Total time: 236.05 mins. - 45 tracks - Great sound quality - 36-page booklet.
