This double Lonehill CD documents the recordings made by Max Roach with Sonny Rollins & Kenny Dorham following the sudden devastating death of Clifford Brown in June 1956. Roach's pianist Richie Powell (Bud's younger brother) had died in the same car crash. Dorham took Clifford's chair but they couldn't settle on a regular pianist - hence the sessions here cut in New York between Sept '56 And May '57 involve 4 different pianists Ray Bryant Hank Jones Wade Legge & Billy Wallace. George Morrow plays bass on 3 of the sessions; Oscar Pettiford on the remaining date. The performances derive from 4 original LPs Max Roach÷ Sonny Rollins Plays For Bird÷ Jazz Contrasts÷ And Jazz In 3-4 Time÷ And vary in repertoire between established jazz standards And new compositions by the leading members
