Details: A splendid, previously unissued performance by tenor legend Sonny Rollins, recorded in Tokyo on his 1963 tour of Japan - with a quintet featuring Paul Bley and on two tracks, Betty Carter. Other personnel on this session are : Reshid Kmal Ali, trumpet; Henry Grimes, bass; & Roy McCurdy, drums. There is also a track with Rollins backed by a Japanese combo; plus, as a bonus, a rare 1956 broadcast (of over 20 minutes) by Rollins with the first incarnation of the Max Roach quintet after Clifford Brown’s tragic death. Featuring : Kenny Dorham (tp), Ray Bryant (p), George Morrow (b), Max Roach (d) - recorded at Café Bohemia, NYC, 'Bandstand USA' Broadcast on October 10, 1956
