Artist: Sonny Rollins Title: Saxophone Colussus / Work Time

Details: Generally regarded as one of Sonny Rollins' very best albums And certainly a true 'essential jazz classic' on this new reissue label. Recorded in New Jersey in 1956 it Features pianist Tommy Flanagan Doug Watkins on bass And the great Max Roach on drums. This CD also includes as a bonus Rollins' complete Work Time÷ album recorded at the same studio seven months before in December 1955 - And featuring Ray Bryant (piano) George Morrow (bass) And again Max Roach. In the post-Bird post-Pres pre-Coltrane world of jazz saxophone Rollins bypassed the acclaimed Getz school And firmly stated his own highly individual right to jazz greatness. The use of the word colossus brings to mind its adjectival derivative colossal a word which has had its share of buffeting about among Hollywood's celluloid hucksters in their press releases regarding many of the empty epics which pass across the screens of the nation. The dictionary says colossal is gigantic; huge; vast. When applied to Sonny Rollins's talent it also signifies depth. ÷ (From Ira Gitler's original liner notes).
