Details:
Sarajevo to Belfast brings together two incredible musicians and advocates of world peace, who have created an album of great passion and compassion, aimed at taking a stand for humanity and against the violence of war. Vedran Smailovic, known as The Cellist of Sarajevo, saw first-hand what the violence of war can do to a country's people, as he endured the horrors of Sarajevo in 1992, when an artillery shell killed 22 innocent people in line for bread at a bakery not far from where he lived. The senselessness of this tragedy drove the former cellist with the Sarajevo Opera to the only action he could do best: playing music. Thereafter, every day at precisely 4pm - the time of the previous day's shelling - Smailovic donned his formal attire and played his cello as the battle raged around him. Day after day, he made his statement for peace and humanity, attracting not only the attention of his fellow citizens, but of the world media and social justice advocates such as Joan Baez, who joined him in the street to demonstrate for peace. Irish Singer Tommy Sands also grew up with the devastation of war and hatred in his native Northern Ireland. As a member of the Sands Family, he has toured around the world singing traditional Irish folk songs as well as those aimed at elevating social consciousness. Sarajevo-Belfast (Smailovic's first album) is unique in that it features the only studio recording of the song (Albinoni Adagio) that Smailovic played for 22 days in the square in Sarajevo which gained him world-wide recognition. Furthermore, it demonstrates the way these artists have worked for peace and healing. For example, while peace talks were going on, Smailovic and Sands recorded Where Have All The Flowers Gone, which documents the spirit of healing and working for peace by bringing together both Catholic and Protestant children to sing on the track. This song has since gone on to become the anthem for the peace movement in Northern Ireland. Also featured are Joan Baez celebrating Smailovic's courage in the song Sarajevo, which she performs with Tommy Sands; and Pete Seeger performing with Vedran Smailovic and Tommy Sands on The Music Of Healing, which has been hailed by Nobel Peace Prize recipient John Hume as a new anthem for our times. Sarajevo to Belfast, which brings together these two men for an album of compelling and compassionate music, is also a celebration of the dedication of Pete Seeger and Joan Baez, two artists who have been at the forefront on the issues of peace, hope and healing in this century
