Details:
The Symphony No.10 was written in 1953, the year Stalin died. Shostakovich uses this piece to liberate himself from the dictator’s shadow, painting a terrible portrait of him in the second movement. Shostakovich then uses the notes ‘D’ ‘E-flat’ ‘C’ ‘B’ (translator’s note: ‘D’ ‘Es’ ‘C’ ‘H’ in the Russian notation system), his initials, as a symbolic sound figure to demonstrate in many variations the fact that Stalin’s regime could not break him. Günther Herbig selects a gloomy start for both works with his Radio Symphony Orchestra Saarbrücken, and throughout avoids the danger of losing the central thread by an overly garish presentation of details. Herbig even knows how to restrain the centrifugal forces of the 4th, and in the 10th leads the listener from the darkest night to defiant cheering without leaving any traces of a dull taste.
