The band emerged in 1966 as the quartet of Robert Wyatt (drums, vocals), Mike Ratledge (keyboards), Kevin Ayers (bass, vocals) and Daevid Allen (guitar, vocals).

Soft Machine occupy an unique place in the history of British rock music. Early front-runners in what became known as the Canterbury Scene, they directly begat such well respected acts as Matching Mole, Kevin Ayers and Gong, while the long-running Caravan were close relations.
