NOW AT MID PRICE: Originally released in 1967, RAGS, REELS & AIRS was immediately recognised as being a recording landmark revered by generations of instrumentalists. It went out of print soon after its release only becoming available again in 1999 when Topic Records released a restored and remastered CD version to great critical praise and substantial sales. RAGS, REELS & AIRS was produced by the legendary American Joe Boyd, who discovered and produced, among others, Nick Drake, The Incredible String Band and, of course, Fairport Convention. In fact, it was Joe Boyd who introduced Dave Swarbrick to Fairport Convention as a way forward for both, the result being the album Liege & Lief and a whole new era for folk and rock music.Dave Swarbrick came to prominence on the folk scene as a young instrumental virtuoso in the Ian Campbell Folk Group. By 1967, when this recording was made, Dave had already left them and had teamed up with Martin Carthy as a duo. While that line-up featured hot instrument tracks in their live sets and recording, in this all-instrumental album the focus was solely on Dave and it really gave him a chance to stretch out and demonstrate his remarkable instrumental prowess. The result was a new era of English instrumental folk and a new approach to folk music altogether. As Joe Boyd says in the original liner notes, reproduced in the CD booklet, Dave Swarbrick is doing perhaps the finest job of reconciling traditional instrumental styles with modern ideas and technique. This is still true almost 40 years later.Dave Swarbrick has since achieved legendary status. This year will see more attention, when he returns to touring after a year's lay off due to illness. In addition, a new Carthy:Swarbrick album is scheduled for later in the year. In the meantime, this mid-price classic is perfectly timed to appeal to the ever growing audience, especially with the publicity that has been generated by the re-release of the classic Liege and Lief album and its feature in the 2006 Radio 2 Folk Awards.
