Even today Wagnerites still rave about the legendary Bayreuth recording of Parsifal whose lengthy score when conducted by Hans Knappertsbusch lasted a whole LP more than his fellow conductorsÆ recordings. But even taken at such a leisurely tempo no one thought of looking impatiently at the clock. Just sit back and listen to the present recording of Wagner Preludes and you certainly wonÆt find this surprising. Bar for bar the maestro picks out even the finest particles of the musical structure and gives his Munich ensemble time and space to conjure up a delightful timbre. Just note the warmth and presence of the wind instruments v only Otto Klemperer managed to achieve comparable results in his recordings of the 1960s. Whatever sort of sound the engineers had had in mind for this recording on the Westminster label they managed to get fairly close to the acoustical ideal of the Bayreuth Festival opera house. Luckily they were not tempted by the possibility of reproducing spectacular lateral effects which abounded in the early days of stereophony. The Wagner coming out of the loudspeakers is dry analytical and quite quite natural. Recording November 1962 at Bavaria Studio Munich by Adolf Enz and Raymond Fugistaler Production
