THE MISSISSIPPI BLUESby Klaus WhiteBorn in Mississippi, just west of the blues-soaked Delta, Bukka White began a stop-start recording career in 1930. Unable to make a living as a full-time musician, White cultivated several careers side-by-side-.-playing pro-fessional baseball in the Negro league and competing as a pro-fighter as well as playing blues guitar. The bulk of his repertoire was recorded during the 30s, and by 1940 his career came to a halt as country blues fell out of favour and fashion.The blues boom of the early 60s revived White's career, and when ED Denson and John Fahey decided to set up their specialist guitar label, Takoma, Bukka White was to be the first on their finely-crafted roster. During the long hiatus preceding the boom many young musicians including Bob Dylan and Joe McDonald (both scoring hits with their respective interpretations of Fixin' To Die) had rediscovered and been influenced by White's back catalogue. White and a handful of other bluesmen could be held indirectly responsible for the revival-.-his recordings inspired those wannabees who later became legends in their own right.This reissue of Takoma's MISSISSIPPI BLUES offers the entire 1963 original album, plus three bonus tracks from 1964. These recordings were his first in 23 years and contain songs written during the hiatus as well as re-recordings of earlier songs. White is a storyteller and the essence of his style is in the contented, reminiscent view of the past-.-he is blissfully blue. His songs are littered with anecdotes and stories either accompanied by his open-tuned rhythmical poundings or just a lone voice.There are some real gems here-.-White's spontaneous and improvised style guarantees a unique performance every time - capturing pure emotion and intimacy. The line-up also includes some cracking instrumentals and it matters not that Bukka's slide playing is not completely accurate. That live, raw style is what makes this recording so exhilarating.
